Birth Stories

I was thinking about the fact that I still needed to share the story of Jonathan's birth on my blog when I realized that I never shared the story of Peter's birth because I started this blog when he was four months old.

So, I'm going to share both of their birth stories.

Peter's Birth Story

It's hard to believe that Peter was born over two years ago! It's strange because in many ways, it seems like yesterday and in other ways, it seems like Peter has been with me forever.

Jeremiah and I had been married just over a year when Peter entered our lives. I had been working as an executive secretary for a very wealthy and prominent fellow in the heart of Salt Lake City. The hours were crazy and I was always exhausted! Plus, I never knew if or when I was going to get a lunch break. So, I usually just stuffed my face whenever an eating opportunity arose. As a result, I was as big as a house (seriously, I gained nearly 20 pounds more with Peter than I did with Jonathan). I also didn't exercise as well that pregnancy as I did with Jonathan. As a result, I had all sorts of aches and pains and I was miserable. My boss kept telling me that if I needed to quit my job early, he would understand because he didn't want me going into labor at work! Seriously, I was so huge that everyone was quite fearful that such a thing would happen.

I worked right up until January 16th (my due date was January 26th). At my final doctor's appointment, my doctor informed me that I was dilated enough to be induced at 39 weeks. I was so miserable and sick of being fat and pregnant that I jumped at the chance. So, we scheduled an appointment to come in and be induced on the morning of Sunday, January 18th.

We arrived at the hospital dark and early and checked in. I got into the hospital gown and got hooked up to everything and then they gave me the pitocin. They also gave me some antibiotic because I tested positive for Strep B (which also meant that I had to stay in the hospital for two days after Peter was born so they could make sure that my baby was healthy and hadn't been infected with Strep B). It was at that point that the nurse informed me that I was already having some very weak contractions (Braxton Hicks contractions). I kept trying to describe to everyone what they felt like for at least a month before and a lot of people kept telling me that what I was feeling wasn't actually contractions. I blindly trusted them and just figured that Peter was pushing extra hard against me with his bum. Let that be a lesson to me to trust your gut response! Contractions feel different for everyone and I should have known my body better!

After receiving the pitocin, I dilated to a 4 and then they broke my water and gave me an epidural. The cute part about that was that Jeremiah watched them put the needle in my back and he took a step back...and immediately passed out. He passed out quite prudently though...as he passed out, it looked like he was simply sitting down on the floor. It happened so peacefully that I didn't realize what had happened until after it had happened! In his words, he said that he could watch horrible things happen to himself, but seeing that happen to me was harder for him than he thought it would be! I thought that was adorable. What a cutey!

Once I received the epidural, all progress completely stopped. I dilated to a 5 and stayed there for the next 6 or 7 hours. It made for a long, boring, and stressful day! The nurses kept mentioning the possibility of a C-Section if I didn't progress. Because we were there so long, the nurse we started out with (who was helpful and charming) left because her shift was over and we got another nurse. Now, don't get me wrong, the second nurse was very nice, but she wasn't quite as gentle as the first nurse. She kept moving me into all sorts of positions trying to get the labor to progress...but all that did was make me almost black out at one point! Also, whether it was due to constantly changing positions or something the anesthesiologist did wrong, my epidural needle somehow got pinched off and I stopped receiving painkillers. So, once I finally started to progress again, I could FEEL it.

Oh, and as a side-note about our nurse, she really got on Jeremiah's nerves. I thought she was fine...though I didn't click with her quite as well as I had with our first nurse. Jeremiah got increasingly frustrated that she kept putting me into different positions and I think we were maybe a little snippy with her a few times. We didn't mean to be, but it was a stressful situation. As a result, she wasn't quite as warm and friendly to us as she might have been.

I kept telling the nurses and doctors that I could feel the contractions and they kept telling me that I should be able to feel them a little. But I was seriously having to breathe through my contractions to bear it. I remember thinking to myself "I've heard stories of women falling asleep after receiving their epidural and being woken up just in time to start pushing...how in the world did those women sleep through this? This is so painful!" Finally, Jeremiah insisted that the anesthesiologist take a look at my epidural and they finally realized that I wasn't getting any medication (though we paid for it anyway, later on when the bills came! Lovely!). By that point, I was dilated to an 8 (so, in my opinion, I experienced a natural labor up to being dilated to an 8). They gave me another epidural and I immediately felt better. Ahhhh. But again, I slowed down and they started dropping the C-Section word again. I didn't want a C-Section and I was really stressed out about it. I asked Jeremiah to give me a blessing. He did. Once the blessing was finished, I started progressing again and before I knew it, it was time to start pushing.

I started pushing at about 11:00 p.m. It was tough work. I couldn't feel anything because of the epidural and I couldn't even tell if I was pushing correctly. Plus, I hadn't eaten since the night before and I was starving and exhausted. I pushed for over an hour. The doctor and nurses kept telling me I was doing a great job, but when I finally asked if there was any progress, my doctor truthfully and apologetically told me that no, there was no progress. My doctor went out into the hall to grab a drink and Jeremiah followed him and convinced him to just use the forceps because I was so tuckered out. So, that's what my doctor did...bless his heart! Two more pushes with the forceps and Peter was out! Hooray!

I was so relieved to be done with the labor and done with being pregnant...and then they laid that sweet little guy on my chest and I instantly fell in love. He was so precious and tiny. I'd waited so long for him. I don't mean just the labor that day, but the fact that he came only a few months before I turned 30. If I'd had my way, I would have gotten married long before the age of 28 and I wouldn't be having babies at all in my thirties! But it's not always about what you think is best, is it?

My sweet rascally Peter was born during the wee hours of the morning (12:35 a.m.) on Monday, January 19th, 2009 weighing in at 7 lbs. 5 oz and measuring 19 1/2 inches long. I should have realized that his timing was a sign of things to come. That little guy is stubborn! I think he wanted to come on Monday all along and did whatever it took to make that happen! Sunday was just never in the cards for me!

Jonathan's Birth Story

When I was 36 weeks along with Jonathan, I was already dilated to a 3 and 50% effaced. My doctor told me that I could go into labor at any time. I made the mistake of telling this information to my sweet, impatient husband who was then asking me about every 5 minutes if I had had a baby yet or if I was going into labor.

I felt great. I had gained a lot less weight this pregnancy and I had exercised 4-5 times a week the entire time. I didn't have the aches and pains that I had last time. When my doctor said that I could go into labor at any time and that the baby was healthy and ready at any point, I thought "Great! I feel good about this. I am happy to just let this happen and let the baby come whenever he is ready."

Then, a week before my due date, it was a gorgeous, uncharacteristically warm day. I decided to take Peter outside to play because he was feeling really cooped up. We played outside for a total of 15 minutes and then Peter stepped in some mud and got both of us muddy as a result. I was so bugged and I stormed inside and changed our clothes. I was ready to call it a day (and you have no idea how many times I wish I had just stayed inside after that), but Peter wanted to go outside again. So, I took Peter back outside. We played outside blissfully and happily for over an hour. Then, Peter asked to go on the swings. As you can read in my previous post, he let go of the swing and broke his leg. Worst day ever.

After Peter broke his leg, I prayed that I wouldn't go into labor until a week after my due date! I just didn't want to deal with having a newborn and a two year old in a cast! I wanted to put off that reality as long as I could! At that point, I had no idea how long Peter would have to wear a cast.

Peter couldn't get the cast put on his leg until the following Wednesday (Primary Children's Hospital only puts casts on once a week--on Wednesday). That particular Wednesday was also my due date.

So, on Wednesday, February 23rd, I woke up bright and early at 6 a.m. to hop into the shower and prepare dinner (slow cooker split pea soup) prior to leaving for Peter's doctor's appointment. However, a little before 7 a.m., I felt my first contraction. At first, I wasn't sure if that's what it really was. I wondered if I was stressing myself out and imagining it because this was literally the only day that I DIDN'T want to go into labor because of all that was going on (in addition to Peter's appointment that morning, Jeremiah had a final presentation in one of his classes that evening). But after a few contractions, I knew that I was going into labor. I just prayed that I wouldn't have the baby before I was able to take Peter to the doctor to get his cast put on him!

I vaguely told Jeremiah that I had a tummy ache and I gave him his lunch and sent him off to work. I then got Peter up, got him breakfast and got him dressed. My mom was meeting me at the doctor's to help me with the appointment (I'm so, so glad she did!). My mom called me while I was heading out the door to see if I was at Primary Children's yet. I told her that I was on my way and also said "Oh, and just a head's up...I'm pretty sure I'm in labor." Well, that freaked her out pretty good!

So, while I was on my way to Primary Children's, I thought it would be a good idea to call Jeremiah and let him know that I thought I was in labor. That stressed him out too!

By the time we checked in for Peter's appointment, my contractions were about 10 minutes apart. With much subtlety (I'm being sarcastic), my Mom said to the receptionist "Is there any way we could hurry this up? Because my daughter is in labor." She said it loud enough for both receptionists and a number of people in the waiting room to hear as well. The receptionist looked pretty stressed out too (and a number of people in the waiting room gave me sympathetic and/or dumbfounded expressions)! I'm grateful that my Mom was there to help with Peter because I kind of zoned out during a few of my contractions while we were in the waiting room!

While Peter was getting his cast put on him, I had to help hold him down to comfort and calm him and I had a particularly strong contraction at that point in time! Luckily, they were very fast in getting us in and out. his appointment was at 9:30 a.m. and I was on the road again, and headed home by 10:30 a.m.

My Mom had to rush back to work to finish up a few things before driving back to take over babysitting duties for Peter so that we could go to the hospital. I called Jeremiah to tell him that I was headed home and promptly got lost in the U of U hospital parking lots and didn't find my way out onto the main roads again for another 20 minutes! By that time, my contractions were 8 minutes apart.

I finally got home around 11 a.m. and fixed Peter some lunch and put on some Sesame Street for him to watch. It was pretty awkward fixing lunch while having some pretty strong and painful contractions! I called Jeremiah a little before noon and told him that my contractions were between 5 and 7 minutes apart and that he needed to head home. I called my mom and told her the same.

Jeremiah got home and we packed up the car with my luggage and I gave Jeremiah some final dinner instructions to pass on to his parents since I wouldn't be home to finish making dinner for them! Jeremiah's parents were surprised and amused that I had made dinner for them while I was in labor! My Mom arrived at that time and took Peter into his room to play and we rushed off to the hospital.

We checked in at the hospital and they put us into a delivery room. We actually got the same nurse (nurse #2) that we had when Peter was born. Ha ha! What are the chances? But it turned out to be a good thing. We all had a chance to redeem ourselves. We got along with her much better and she was nothing but sweet and attentive to us. I thought she was very nice and helpful. We had a chance to be nicer and more grateful to her too. We must have just caught her on a bad day last time (or she caught us on a bad day!).

I was already dilated to a 6 and completely effaced. Our nurse was worried that I wouldn't even have time for an epidural and that I would be having a baby within the hour. By that time, it was 1 p.m. I was just worried that I wouldn't have time to get the antibiotic for the Strep B administered (yup, I tested positive again). As it turned out, if my water HAD broken at that point in time, I wouldn't have had time for an epidural or antibiotic. I literally would have had a baby 30 minutes after I arrived. But they rushed both the epidural and antibiotic and my water didn't break at all. Whew! As a result, I was able to receive enough antibiotic for Jonathan and my doctor was able to finish all of his appointments for the day without needing to reschedule any (if I were in the place of his patients, I would have been grateful)! I was grateful to buy a little more time so that Jonathan could get the medicine he needed.

My doctor came to see me at 5 p.m. (Jeremiah had briefly stepped out to get some food for himself). He said "Well, why don't we break your water and have a baby?" I said that sounded great to me! Jeremiah got back about 5 minutes after they broke my water. He ate his dinner ASAP and I pushed for only about 15 minutes and by 5:30 p.m. on the dot, we welcomed Jonathan into the world!

Labor #2 was SOOOOOO much easier than labor #1! Hooray!

Jonathan weighed in at 7 lbs. 13 oz and measured 19 inches long. It was so wonderful to hold that sweet little guy in my arms...though I couldn't hold him for long because I immediately started shivering and shaking from the adrenaline of it all. But once I stopped shivering, I was able to hold and adore my newest sweet little guy.

Peter and Jonathan

Here are a few videos that I took of Peter and Jonathan.

Above: Jonathan--Awake and Alert (sorry, it's a short video because Peter fell and hurt himself before I could record for very long! He's okay though).

Pictures of Jonathan

Many of you have been asking for more pictures. Rather than attaching them in an email, I'm posting some here. Enjoy!

Above: My sweet boys (sweet Posin' Pete and sweet sleepy Jonathan)

Above: Jeremiah had Young Men's last night and this is basically how I spent my evening. I cuddled a sleepy Jonathan and cuddled a sad and sick little Peter (Peter has a cold...he showed the first signs of it the very day we got home from the hospital). I wonder how long it will be before I can do my hair again on a regular basis! Hmmm....

Above: Pete and Jonathan hangin' out with Daddy.

I need to take more pictures of Jonathan. The problem is that my camera tends to take some fuzzy pictures at times--especially in low light and without the use of a flash. The other problem is that you can't really take pictures of a newborn with a flash because it scares them and makes them squint! I'll have to get Jeremiah to take some pictures of Jonathan using his phone until he can tolerate the flash on my camera!

Welcome Jonathan Jeremiah Washburn!

Jonathan Jeremiah Washburn was born on February 23, 2011 at 5:30 p.m. He weighed in at 7 lbs. 13 oz and measured 19 inches long.

It was a much easier labor than my first one! Whew! I was praying that I wouldn't go into labor on the 23rd (my actual due date) because I had to take Peter up to Primary Children's Hospital that morning to get his cast put on him. Well, the Lord had other plans!

I started feeling labor pains at 7 a.m. Luckily, Jonathan waited until after Peter's doctor's appointment to make his entrance into the world. However, I was having contractions about 10 minutes apart throughout Peter's appointment!

Peter is doing well and adjusting to the cast. He also seems to be excited about his new brother...but he DOES NOT like the hospital and wanted me to leave ASAP. However, I can't leave until tomorrow!

But all is well and I will be home soon enough!

It's Been a Rough Week

I'm not going to lie...this has been one of my hardest weeks in recent memory. Peter has required more patience than usual...I think he can sense that changes are coming. He was easier to deal with this week than last week though. Until Wednesday.

Wednesday morning was so nice. The weather was so mild. Peter had his two year well-check appointment scheduled for 4 p.m. that afternoon, so I woke Peter up early that morning and decided to let him play outside so that he could get tuckered out and go down for his nap more easily and be well-rested for his doctor's appointment.

So, we went outside to play. He wanted to go into the lower half of the backyard which turned out to be really muddy. So, after being outside for only about 20 minutes, we had to go back inside to change our pants and shoes which were too muddy to continue wearing. I wish, wish, wish I had stayed inside after we changed our clothes. But Peter wasn't done playing outside, so out we went again.

Peter decided he wanted to get on the swing. The swing in our backyard isn't a toddler swing...but Peter is really steady on it. He swings on it a lot and always holds on tight. He was swinging for probably 20 minutes or more and was happy as can be. He just wanted to swing higher and higher. I kept catching him and asking him if he wanted to swing some more and the answer was always "Yeah!" I told him to hold on tight and again, he would say "Yeah!" So, I continued to push him in his swing and he was just so happy...but then...even though I couldn't see the front of him, I knew exactly what was going on in his head. It was almost as if he thought "I wonder what will happen if I don't hold on tight and just let go..." So, that's what he did. When he was the farthest away from me on the upside of the swing cycle, he just let go. He flipped through the air once and then landed on the grass flat on his back. It was probably one of the scariest things I have seen in my entire life. I can't tell you how many times I have replayed that in my mind since it happened. It was horrible.

I ran to him as quickly as possible and scooped him up. I ran inside and grabbed his special blanket and cuddled him on the couch. He shook and trembled in my arms and cried for about 30 minutes. I couldn't tell, at that point, if he was hurt anywhere or just scared. I knew he had bitten his tongue because he had blood in his mouth, but that soon stopped. Once he calmed down, he indicated that he was hungry for lunch. I felt very much relieved and left to make him a corn dog...leaving him on the couch. He immediately freaked out again after I left and resumed his crying. Jeremiah came home from work on his lunch break and we tried examining Peter together. At that point, Jeremiah tried to stand Peter up on his feet and he immediately collapsed. We thought that he had sprained his ankle and decided that rather than going to the emergency room, we would just keep our appointment with his pediatrician and see what she thought.

We tried to get Peter down for a nap, but he would only sleep on me...and only on the couch sitting up...and because of my pregnant belly, I couldn't stay in the same position for too long because my ribs started killing me. I tried to shift positions as gently and quietly as possible, but it woke him up anyway. Bless Jeremiah's heart because he took the rest of the day off from work to help me with Peter. Once Peter woke up, we decided to go to the doctor a little early in the hopes that we might be able to get him in to see her early.

We got to the appointment 30 minutes early, but I should have known better. That particular office has NEVER been on time for their appointments. It's so dumb because if you're 20 minutes late, you lose your appointment time, but they have consistently been 20-40 minutes late meeting me for my appointment times. So, they didn't get us back to see the doctor until 30 minutes after his appointment should have started. Yup...that means we had to wait in the waiting room for a full hour before meeting with Peter's doctor.

When we explained the situation and she looked at his foot, she was pretty sure that there was a chance that Peter had broken his foot, ankle, or leg. So, she ordered an X-ray for Peter and put a splint on his little leg. Peter was so sad that I couldn't be there for his X-rays (since I'm pregnant). And, of course, the X-ray confirmed that he had indeed broken his right leg (tibia and fibula).

We didn't hear the results of the X-ray until 7 p.m. that night and our pediatrician said she was worried that Peter might have compartmental syndrome (where the break causes you to bleed into your tissue...which causes more pain and complications than a simple break). So, she instructed us to head up to the emergency room at Primary Children's hospital. So, after already spending about 3 hours at St. Mark's, we headed to Primary Children's. I'm so grateful that my Mom offered to come up to Primary Children's to help us out with Peter. I am really far along in my pregnancy and taking care of Peter under normal conditions can tucker me out...let alone the conditions we were under that night. My Mom's presence helped sooooo much and I was incredibly grateful that she met us up there to keep Peter entertained and occupied while we waited.

We got there at 7:30 p.m. and as soon as we got outside, we discovered that a crazy snowstorm had started. I thought "Oh please, please, please don't let me go into labor on top of all of this!" St. Mark's didn't send the X-rays up to Primary Children's...so we had to get more X-rays done (I wonder how much that will end up costing us). After a lengthy wait, we got the X-rays. After another lengthy wait (and a brief scare), we were assured that Peter didn't have compartmental syndrome and that the break wouldn't require surgery...but that indeed he had broken his leg and would need a better splint put on his leg and then we would need to schedule an appointment...for NEXT WEDNESDAY!...to get a cast put on his leg. Apparently, Primary Children's Hospital only puts casts on every Wednesday. So, we finally returned home at about 10:30 p.m. Yup! 6 hours in two different hospitals on the same day. Thank GOODNESS I didn't go into labor! I would have had a break-down. I already cried enough that day as it was.

We finally got Peter settled down enough to go to bed around 11 p.m. He woke up again around 12:30 a.m. and went to bed again for good at about 1 a.m. He slept soundly until the next morning.

The rest of the week has just been...interesting. I had my weekly pre-natal appointment with my doctor the very next morning. My OBGYN is very sweet and understanding. He assured me that Peter would be alright and it could have been worse--at least he didn't get any neck or head injuries. He also assured me that things would be fine once the baby came. We decided to schedule an induction for one week after my due date. If I come earlier than that, so be it. But I'm not coming earlier than that by my choice, I'll tell you that!

I picked up Peter's prescription immediately after my appointment and bought him some basketball shorts since we can't fit most of his regular pants over his splint. Peter has been alternately very good and sweet and very frustrated and cranky the remainder of the week. We have had to wrestle him down to give him his pain-killers. He is an expert at spitting out all of his medicine. He gets so frustrated that he can't move around as much as he is used to. He has started scooting and crawling again since he can't walk and run with the splint on. He's such a little daredevil, it's scary. I'll run off to fix him his breakfast or lunch really fast and he'll slip off the couch or try to climb on things while I'm gone. It scares me to death. Plus, I think due to his frustrations at being immobile, he has started hitting me and Jeremiah this week. Fun.

It's hard because he can be so sweet and cuddly...but then he can be so demanding and downright mean as an invalid.

It makes me feel really tired and it makes me wonder how in the world I am going to survive the first few weeks once Jonathan joins us.

So, Peter is scheduled to have a cast put on him next Wednesday...my due date (February 23rd). So, everyone, pray that I don't go into labor until after Peter's cast is put on him. It stinks because I was really ready to have Jonathan early...or as soon as he decided to come. And now, I'm hoping that he actually comes a week after my due date so that it will be easier with Peter!

Jeremiah stayed home with Peter today during church and I planned to just go for the third hour to teach Sharing Time. I was kind of looking forward to it because I needed a break from watching Peter! However, there was a huge accident on the freeway. A drive that usually takes me 15 minutes ended up taking an hour and 30 minutes. Yup, I missed Sharing Time completely. Thank goodness for cell phones because I was able to contact the Primary President and let her know that I wasn't going to make it. And thank goodness for our wonderful music leader because she just filled the remainder of the time with Singing Time.

Needless to say, it wasn't the relaxing get-away that I was looking forward to. Especially since once I finally got home, I made lunch for Peter and Jeremiah and Peter had a breakdown and decided to act like a complete spoiled brat for the next hour...in addition to head-butting my forehead with the back of his head when I was trying to cuddle him and get him settled down for a nap. I'm either going to have a bruise or a small goose-egg on my forehead for the next few days.

I sure love my little guy...but he sure is strong-willed and requires a whole lot of patience sometimes. I hope I can make it through Jonathan's first few weeks alright! I'm quickly losing my resolve to even try breast-feeding with Jonathan (after my memories of how hard it was with Peter). I guess we'll just have to see how it goes in the hospital.

Wish me luck you guys! I'm going to need it!

Pregnancy Comments

Above: I took this picture on Sunday. I am now 37 weeks along (due exactly 3 weeks from today!) I like this picture because it shows Peter's first reaction to picture-taking...to get in on the action.
Above: I like this picture because it shows Peter's second reaction to picture-taking...to make a grab for the camera.

My sister (who is pregnant and due five days before me) recently posted on her blog regarding the things people say to you when you're pregnant.

It really is true that you get a lot of interesting comments and unasked for advice when you're pregnant.

I got a lot more comments the last time around (perhaps it was because I gained more weight or the fact that because I was still working, I was out in public a lot more). But I thought I'd share a few comments with you now!

  1. "Wow! You're belly is HUGE!" comment by a co-worker when I was pregnant with Peter.
  2. Some random guy in an elevator: "Are you having twins?" My answer: "No." His 100% serious and somewhat concerned response: "Are you sure?" What I thought, but didn't say: "Yeah, pretty sure! Thanks a lot, jerk!" This comment also happened when I was pregnant with Peter.
  3. "You're going to have so many days where you wish your baby was right back inside of you." I had so many people say this to me when I was pregnant with Peter that I lost count. For the record, I HATE being pregnant and I never ONCE wished that Peter was back inside of me...even on my roughest, most emotional baby-blues days did I ever wish I was pregnant again! Besides, even though the first six weeks with Peter were an emotional baby boot camp rollercoaster (mostly due to the disappointment of failed breastfeeding, despite meeting with 3 lactation consultants), I absolutely loved holding him in my arms and marveling at what a precious little guy he was! I have always felt so blessed to have him in my life. He is a miracle and I am so grateful that I was able to participate in that miracle by helping to give him life!
  4. The time when someone asked me how far along I was with Peter (fourteen weeks, at the time) and then proceeded to tell me how their wife miscarried at exactly that same time and they kept the fetus in a jar in their fridge for awhile. For the whole story, click here.
  5. A conversation I had at the store today with a very well-meaning woman went as follows: Her: "When are you due?" Me: "Three weeks. Hopefully the little guy comes on time or even a little bit early!" Her (in a teaching me a lesson kind of tone): "Well, the important thing is that the baby is healthy--even if that means you have to come late." Here's why this conversation bugged me: of course I don't want to put the health of my baby in jeopardy by having the baby early! I would never put my own short-term, selfish wants before the well-being of my child! Why would a total stranger feel that it is their place to give me such unwarranted advice? Especially when it is unnecessary. I happen to know that I am already dilated to a 3 and 50% effaced and that my doctor said everything looks a-ok and if the baby were to come tomorrow, he'd be cool with it and the baby would be fine.
  6. My favorite response of all proves that sometimes actions speak louder than words. Peter has become increasingly concerned by the state of my belly button. It's funny because, as I mentioned, I gained a lot more weight last time, but my belly button didn't pop out as much as it has this time. It kind of flattened out last time. But this time, it is definitely protruding. I'm at the point where (especially when I'm wearing pajamas and sitting on the couch) my shirt will sometimes roll up before I realize it and my belly will be bared. If Peter catches this happening, he will give my belly a disgusted look and pull my shirt back down. But my all-time favorite response? Today, Peter found a box of band-aids that had somehow fallen under our bed. He took out a band-aid, insisted that I open it, and then directed me to put it over my belly button. When he wasn't looking, I pulled it off, but later, he wanted to make sure that the band-aid was still in place. When he discovered it wasn't, he insisted that I put another band-aid over my belly button. I only just realized that the band-aid is still covering my offending belly button. It looks even sillier because the box of band-aids that Peter found are specifically for knuckles and finger-tips. So, it kind of looks like an "X" marking the spot! What a cute, silly guy I have! Also, since I've been pregnant before, I have the consolation of knowing that my belly button and stomach will go back to normal (after a lot of exercise, but nonetheless, my former belly button glory will be regained!).

Lunch Ideas for Toddlers?

Peter can be kind of a picky eater. He likes a lot of different kinds of foods, but he likes variety. For instance, he loves corn dogs, but if you serve it to him again too soon, he won't even look at it, let alone touch it.

I'm going to give you guys a list of foods I serve Peter for lunch. If you have any additional ideas, I would be so grateful to hear them!

Corn dogs
Hot dogs
Quesadillas
Grilled cheese sandwiches
Chicken nuggets
Tamales
PB&J's
Macaroni and cheese
Ramen noodles
Chef Boyardee stuff
Toaster oven pizzas (made on either English muffins or pita bread)

I'll give him dinner leftovers from the night before with varying levels of success too.

But does anyone have any other suggestions or ideas?
