August, Part 1: The Camping Trip That Almost Was

Above: Last year's camping trip was somewhat disastrous (what with Johnny falling in the fire and the huge Hispanic family that showed up noisily to pitch their tents at about 11 p.m.), but we decided to try again. We headed up Big Cottonwood Canyon...but all, repeat all, the spots were filled. So, then we drove all the way back to our canyon up Tibble Fork and found a spot. We thought we were good to go!

Above: We found a great spot by the river.

Above: The boys had a ton of fun throwing rocks in the river.

Above: Acting silly, as usual.

Above: My super silly guy. What a ham.

Above: My handsome guy with his wild mountain man beard.

Above: Sweet little Johnny...at least he was sweet at the start of it.

Above: We enjoyed some good food.

Above: That beard is getting out of control. Look at how long it is!

Above:  Who? Me?

This little guy was the reason we headed home before even staying one night. Our original plan was to find a place up Big Cottonwood so that we could do some hiking around Silver Lake until sundown to tire the guys out...and then we could retire to the tent and sleep soundly. Well, when we ended up in a totally different canyon, our plans changed. It isn't quite as easy to drive in and out of the campsite we were in, and there weren't really any hiking trails right by our camp site. For whatever reason, our boys just ache to get into the tent...and then they get bored because it is still light outside and they feel like there is nothing to do. So, we headed to our tent before it got dark--despite trying to get the boys to roast marshmallows, etc. and hang out by the river and campfire. We tried to put a movie on in the tent, but Johnny was super wiggly. When I tried to change Johnny into his pajamas, he spilled a bottle of water all over himself. So, I tried to change him into some other pajamas, but he had a tantrum because he wanted to wear the pajamas that were wet...only he wanted them to be dry, of course. Peter and Jeremiah were mellow and watching the movie, and Peter was actually almost asleep. However, Johnny was screaming so much that I had to take him to the van for a time-out. He continued to scream and cry there. I couldn't get him calmed down. I debated sleeping in the van...but eventually, Jeremiah and I just decided to pack everything up and head home. So, that is what we did. It was a very anti-climactic camping trip, that is for sure. Well, you live, you learn. We have since found some camp sites that accept reservations, so you can bet your boots that we will be planning ahead next time.
